READY WITH ROCKETS—Forty fifth graders from Sewanee Elementary School visited The University of Tennessee Space Institute on Wednesday and made “bottle rockets.” Not the kind you shoot off on July 4th, these rockets were made from real plastic bottles, some as big as 2-liters. Filled partly with water, they were then pumped up with air until they flew up, up and away. SES students Alley Sholey, Angelina Huber-Feely, Georgie Huber, Mari Polvino, Ian Cooper and Rachael Mullin are shown here (left to right) anxiously awaiting their turn to see how high their rockets would fly. In additional to the bottle rockets, the students enjoyed a presentation by Dr. William Hofmeister on communication using light and fiber optics.
BOTTLE ROCKET LAUNCHES—After
learning about lasers in the Center for Laser Applications with Dr.
William Hofmeister, fifth graders from Sewanee Elementary School
visiting The University of Tennessee Space Institute on Wednesday
set out to set off rockets like this one. Students built their
“bottle rockets” from real plastic bottles, some as big as 2-liters.
Then, filled partly with water, they were pumped up with air until
they took off, flying high into the sky.
