The UTSI Flight Research Facility (FRF) is owned by the University
of Tennessee and operated by the UTSI Aviation Systems Program. The
facility is located on the Tullahoma Regional Airport (THA), 2 miles
northwest of the city of Tullahoma, Tennessee. The airport has two
main runways, both approximately 5,000 feet in length, and two turf
runways and is at an elevation of 1,082 feet. Various non-precision
instrument approaches (GPS, SDF, VOR, and NDB) are available. The
local airspace around Tullahoma airport is sparsely populated and
unrestricted, making it ideal for flight test operations.
The FRF facility consists of a 10,000 square foot (929.0 m2), two
bay hangar and a 1,700 square foot (157.9 m2) prototype shop. The
hangar has approximately 41,000 square feet (3,809.0 m2) of adjacent
ramp space and immediate access to the runways and taxiways of the
Tullahoma airport. The FRF hangar facility houses the UTSI aircraft,
instrumentation shop, classroom, and offices. The prototype shop
includes a small machine shop and composites fabrication capability
to provide efficient aircraft modifications and prototyping.
Also located at the airport is an additional simulation laboratory.
This simulator is used for simulating larger transport-type aircraft
performing research on icing and integrated vehicle health
management systems (IVHM). This simulator is equipped with a
transport-type control column and throttles in order to provide
high-fidelity simulation of larger transport handling qualities.
