The
UTSI Flight Systems Laboratory provides students the capability to
assemble and test flight instruments for flight test and airborne
science research. The laboratory contains 6 workbenches, each of
which is equipped with a National Instruments Universal Serial Bus
(USB) based data acquisition system with a PC. All of the PCs run
LabVIEW for data acquisition tasks.
The laboratory also contains two PCs capable of running one of three
flight simulation packages (X-PlaneŽ, Orbiter and FlightGear) to act
as data generators for the instruments. The laboratory also features
a full suite of typical instrumentation utilized aboard UTSI flight
tes
t
aircraft (Inertial Measurement Units, Integrated Pressure Sensors,
Global Positioning Systems etc…) so that hardware-software
integration may be performed in the laboratory. The laboratory
utilizes a private internal Local Area Network for high rate/high
volume applications as well as interconnection with the UTSI
network.
The Systems Laboratory also contains telecommunications test
equipment for troubleshooting serial communications devices.
Currently the laboratory is
supporting
integration of an air turbulence probe, the Polar Mesospheric Cloud
experiment camera suite, and instrumentation upgrades for the Navajo
and Saratoga. The laboratory is also utilized for classes such as
Aviation Systems 508 - Flight Test Instrumentation. The Systems
Laboratory PCs can also be configured as a “Mission Control” for
monitoring simulations or real flight data.
