Many of you are probably wondering, "What is Aviation Systems?" Aviation Systems is a unique blend of aerospace engineering, aviation technology, flight science, and "hands on" flight test engineering and flight research. We offer a unique Master of Science degree that provides a theoretical and practical educational experience in these technical areas.
We operate a fleet of research aircraft, at the UTSI Flight Research Facility on the Tullahoma Regional Airport, that are an integral part of our curriculum. The aircraft are also available for our students and faculty to conduct their research. The students even have the opportunity to fly in these aircraft as flight researchers and flight test engineers.
Our current research areas include projects in aircraft performance and flying qualities, atmospheric and earth/ocean science, flight systems and human factors, aircraft design, and advanced flight test instrumentation. Our research may also be conducted in collaboration with the UTSI Aerospace Engineering Department or our other academic departments. Both thesis and non-thesis research options are available.
If you have an undergraduate engineering degree, especially in aerospace engineering, you are probably well prepared for our graduate program. If you have another type of degree, you will need a strong background in advanced mathematics and physics to excel in our program. You don't have to be a pilot to enter our program, although some experience or knowledge about aeronautics and airplanes can be helpful.
We invite you to study in full-time residence at the University of Tennessee Space Institute in Tullahoma, Tennessee. As an Aviation Systems graduate student you will divide your time between attending classes and studying on the beautiful, lakefront UTSI main campus and conducting flight research at our Flight Research Facility on Tullahoma Airport. A limited number of Graduate Research Assistantships are available to well qualified, full-time students. If you are unable to attend full time, you can take advantage of our vibrant distance learning program, where you can take classes on a part-time basis.
We are a growing program, seeking to increase the number of our full time graduate students, staff, and faculty. We are also expanding our flight research into exciting new areas and technologies. We are excited about sharing our enthusiasm for aerospace flight research with you. Please feel free to give us a call or send us an e-mail to find out more about Aviation Systems.
