Dr. Kenneth E. Tempelmeyer, '59 '70 ES

Dr. Tempelmeyer is a native of St. Louis MO, where he received his primary and secondary education. In 1952 he graduated with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Missouri at Rolla, the state’s primary engineering college. After his graduation, he was employed by NASA at Langley Field, VA. as a research engineer. In 1955 he accepted a position at the Air Force’s Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) in Tullahoma, TN. He held several positions at AEDC rising to become the Manager of the Research Branch of the Aerospace Facility. While at AEDC he earned an M.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1959 and a Ph.D. in Engineering Science in 1969 from the University of Tennessee. From 1973 to 1977 he served as Professor of Mechanical Engineering and was the first Program Manager for the MHD research program at the University of Tennessee Space Institute.

After spending two years from 1977 to 1979 at the Argonne National Laboratory as Program Manager of the Open Cycle MHD program, he was appointed in 1979 as Dean of the College of Engineering at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL, and served in that capacity during a decade of rapid growth and expansion of the College’s enrollment, graduate programs and funded research. While at southern Illinois University, Dean Tempelmeyer served as Chairman of the Deans’ Council for two years, as a member of the SIU President’s Budget Advisory Committee, and on the Executive Committee of the University’s Technology Commercialization Center.

Honors and awards that he has received include the Air Force’s von Karman Fellowship in 1963, the Secretary of the Navy Fellowship in 1992. He has also been named as one of the University of Tennessee Space Institute’s Distinguished Graduates. He is a member of several honorary societies including Tau Beta PI, Sigma Xi, Tau Alpha Pi and the Golden Key Society.

Dr. Tempelmeyer has been a member and held offices in a number of professional and technical societies. He has authored or coauthored more than 60 technical papers, journal articles, and book chapters. He holds three U.S. patents and has provided consultant services for several companies and State and Federal agencies. He served more than two years as the U.S. delegation leader in an US/USSR cooperative program in MHD power generation development in the U.S. and Russia.

His work and technical interests have been in the general area of heat and mass transfer. A significant portion of his technical activity has been devoted to various aspects of magnetohydrodynamics power generation. He also has interests in acoustics and noise control.

He is now retired and residing in Nashville, TN where he and his wife, Doris enjoy sailing and traveling.
