International Student Admission

The University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) accepts only the students who have superior records. International students must have an equivalent 4-year Bachelor’s degree with cumulative grade averages of:

• 3.0 (undergraduate and graduate course work)
• 14 and 15 on 20 point scale
• 80.00 from Chinese or Taiwanese institutions
• 1^st Class or Division from Indian institutions
• Upper 2^nd Class Honors on various British systems

The following items must be received before admission will be considered.

2.   Official or attested university records which show the degree awarded, with certified translations if the records are not in English (notarized copies are NOT acceptable). Records must bear signature of Registrar or ascending administrator (sorry, professor or head of department signatures are not acceptable).

3.    Certification of English proficiency. Every student whose native language is not English must submit official scores from either the TOEFL test or the IELTS test taken within the last two years or have received a degree from an accredited U.S. Institution within the past two years. Minimum acceptable TOEFL score is: 550 on the pen and paper test, 213 the computer-based (CBT), or 80 on internet based test (iBT). Minimum acceptable score on the IELTS test is 6.5. All electrical engineering applicants must have the minimum TOEFL score, regardless of undergraduate institution attended. NOTE: OFFICIAL TEST MUST BE SENT DIRECTLY TO UT-KNOXVILLE FROM EDUCATIONAL TESTING SERVICES (ETS) OR THE BRITISH COUNCIL.

4.    GRE is required for Graduate Research Assistantships in all departments. GRE is required for admission to all departments except aviation systems, applied mathematics and physics. The institutional reporting code for UTSI is R1843.

The University will not enroll any student who has not been approved initially or for transfer by the Immigration and Naturalization (INS) to attend UTSI.

An international student may not enroll as a probationary or non-degree student.

The same Application for Admission is used for the Knoxville campus as for UTSI, but applicants must indicate which campus they plan to attend.  Applications cannot be reviewed by more than one department simultaneously.

 

NOTE: Applicants not awarded an assistantship for the term in which they apply, will be considered for the following two terms without further application.
