HR – Procedure 135

Section 100
Proc. 135
Subject: Probationary Period
Effective: 07/01/78
Revision (6): 07/01/2015
All newly hired regular staff employees, including those converting from temporary or student to regular appointments, shall serve one probationary period of six calendar months in an active pay status with the university beginning with the first day of regular employment. At the end of the first three calendar months of regular University employment for a staff employee, the UTSI Human Resources Office shall forward the employee’s supervisor a written probationary period performance review form to be completed for the subject employee. The supervisor should review this with the employee and submit the report to the UTSI Human Resources Office indicating whether or not the employee is performing satisfactorily.

At the end of the six calendar months, the UTSI Human Resources Office shall forward the employee’s supervisor the final probationary period performance review form to be completed for the subject employee. The supervisor should review this with the employee and submit the report to the UTSI Human Resources Office indicating whether or not the employee is performing satisfactorily.

If the employee’s work performance is not considered satisfactory by the end of the six calendar month probationary period, the employee should be terminated. The proposed termination date should be indicated on the probationary period performance review form and returned to the UTSI Human Resources Office. Extension of the probationary period beyond six calendar months is not permitted.

Any regular staff employee whose employment is terminated for any cause shall automatically serve a six calendar month probationary period should the employee ever be re-employed by the University.

If a regular staff non-exempt employee is to be terminated “for cause,” rather than for inadequate work performance during his/her probationary period, supervisors should consult UTSI Human Resources Procedure 525, Subject: Disciplinary Actions and also contact the Director of Human Resources.
