Engineering Science Overview

Graduate programs leading to the degrees of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy with a major in engineering science are available to graduates of recognized curricula in engineering, mathematics, or one of the physical or biological sciences. Students entering the ES graduate program without an undergraduate engineering degree will likely be required to complete additional engineering course work to meet degree requirements.
Program concentrations at UTSI include optical engineering, laser materials processing, solidification physics, solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, and computational mechanics. In addition to these concentrations, interdisciplinary academic programs can be tailored to meet individual needs or interests.
Each applicant is advised as to any prerequisite courses required for entering a program. The student’s program of study must be approved by his/her advisory committee and must comply with the requirements of the Graduate School. The student’s major professor may be selected from a department other than Engineering Science and Mechanics; however, at least one member of the student’s graduate advisory committee must be an ES faculty member.
The flexibility and interdisciplinary aspects of the program are intended to be of particular pertinence to individuals involved in research, development, or design activities whose interests in advanced education (either full-time or part-time) lie at the interface between science and engineering and/or can best be met by interdisciplinary study in engineering. The department’s course offerings and research activities are focused to meet the needs of students seeking preparation for employment in engineering areas requiring specialization in theoretical, applied and/or computational mechanics, and in related interdisciplinary studies such as laser applications and plasma science.
