The University of Tennessee Space Institute Discrimination Complaint Procedure

If you are an employee, student, applicant for employment, applicant for admission, or are otherwise a participant in a UTSI program or activity, and you believe you have been discriminated against in violation of UT Policy HR0220 – Equal Employment Opportunity, the process below is designed to help you resolve your complaint.

Where and when to file a complaint
Complaints of discrimination should be directed to the UTSI Office of Equity and Diversity, 411 B.H. Goethert Parkway, Tullahoma, TN 37388, Telephone: 931-393-7226. Complaints must be in writing and filed within 180 days of the alleged discriminatory action. Complaints may also be submitted by completing and submitting the Discrimination Complaint form (Discrimination Complaint Form). In certain circumstances, at the discretion of OED, complaints filed outside that time limit, or not submitted in writing, may be investigated.
Employees and students should first discuss the complaint with his or her immediate supervisor/advisor. If the complaint is not resolved, the employee will submit the complaint in writing within five (5) working days to the Equity & Diversity Officer. Applicants for employment or former employees should also submit their complaints to the Equity & Diversity Officer.
The Equity & Diversity Officer will conduct an investigation and render a decision within a reasonable period of time.
If the employee or job applicant is not satisfied with the decision of the Equity & Diversity Officer, he or she may file an appeal within five (5) working days after notice of the decision with the Executive Director, UTSI.
A non-exempt employee who alleges discrimination (including claims of racial and sexual harassment) in work assignments or conditions of work may, as an alternative to the above appeal, enter the grievance process at step 3 as outlined in Human Resources Procedure 640, Grievances. The request to enter the grievance procedure must be initiated within 15 workdays after receiving the decision of the UTSI Executive Director.
The decision of the UTSI Executive Director may be appealed to the next level of administration.
