HR – Procedure 480

Section 400
Proc. 480
Subject: Work Schedules
Effective: 07/01/78
Revision (7): 07/01/2015

Standard Work Week and Work Day:

The standard work day for all full-time staff exempt, staff non-exempt, and student employees at the Space Institute is either:
8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, with one hour for lunch, or
7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with one hour off for lunch, or
8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with one half hour off for lunch.
All full-time staff employees must work 40 hours per week. The work day schedule must be approved by the employee’s supervisor.
Modified Work Day:

A modified work day where feasible may be approved by the supervisor to suit specific needs of the division or office. A modified work day may also be requested by an employee based on personal needs or convenience so long as essential services can be provided. Such requests by the employee must be reviewed and approved by the supervisor. If a modified work schedule is to be used the supervisor will: (1) ensure that all full-time employees have a work schedule which includes 40 hours of work time each week; and (2) furnish the Human Resources Office a signed statement approving an employee’s modified work schedule. Supervisors are responsible for ensuring compliance with the schedule either standard or modified of each employee under their supervision.
Shifts:

Supervisors may assign employees to work other than the first shift on a short term basis to meet specific work or test needs. However, supervisors must notify the Human Resources Director prior to assigning an employee to work other than first shift for a period of time in excess of one month. This notification requirement is waived if the work is scheduled in response to test requirements.
Certain job classifications may be eligible for shift differential pay.
