Sixteen area high school students and four
teachers will attend a Computation Science Camp at The
University of Tennessee Space Institute July 24-Aug. 4.
“Students and teachers will be amazed at their own abilities
when they learn to use some of the computational tools,”
said Dr. Bill Hofmeister, director of the sponsoring Center
for Laser Applications at UTSI.
He said eighth, ninth, and tenth-graders from Coffee
County’s Central High School and Franklin County High “will
learn science through the use of very sophisticated computer
programs.”
The Shodor Foundation will facilitate the program, described
by Hofmeister as “on the cutting edge of science education.”
This training program is the third such “camp” held at UTSI
this summer aimed at stimulating interest in science and
mathematics among pre-college youths.
Eighteen area young people participated in an ASM Materials
Camp earlier this month and a “Mad Science Camp” then drew
53 elementary students from Tullahoma and Franklin County
systems.
