Professor Honored at AIAA Awards Luncheon

Joseph Majdalani, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and the H. H. Arnold Chair of Excellence in Advanced Propulsion at the University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI), was honored at the annual award luncheon, hosted by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Tennessee Section. The luncheon was held on May 29, 2013 at the Arnold Lakeside Center.

Majdalani received the AIAA Tennessee Section Special Award for mentoring and developing students capable of producing highly regarded scientific papers in very difficult areas of fluid mechanics pioneered by Majdalani. He is internationally known for remarkable scientific and academic productivity in the aeronautical and applied mathematical sciences and for his active participation in AIAA sponsored conferences. Majdalani’s graduate student mentorship has been consistent for many years. His nomination for the award was made by Roy Schulz, Senior Propulsion Engineer in the High Speed Systems Test Technology Area of the Test Resource Management Center, U.S. Department of Defense, located at AEDC, and former UTSI professor and program chair. According to Schulz, “Majdalani has demonstrated outstanding graduate student mentorship, which has led to tremendous recognition for the Tennessee Section, as evidenced in Majdalani’s graduate students co-authoring eight best paper awards in four consecutive years.”

Colonel Raymond Toth, AEDC Commander, commended Majdalani on his valiant efforts at bringing tremendous recognition to UTSI, for graduating engineers of the finest caliber, and for inspiring the next generation of scientists and researchers.
