Applied Fluid Dynamics Research

UTSI has a distinguished history of investigating, developing, and applying advanced fluid dynamics technology to aerodynamic, propulsion, and industrial systems. Improved support of AEDC research needs and stronger interdisciplinary research proposals are two of the group’s main goals.

This group boasts the Boling Chair of Excellence in Space Propulsion, currently occupied by Dr. Gary Flandro. Topics he and his students are researching include a NASA-commissioned study on spacecraft propulsion options for a manned trip to Mars.

Current analytical and experimental activities include

  • vortex and vortex dominated flows
  • aeroacoustics
  • heat transfer
  • turbulent flows
  • aircraft aerodynamics
  • flows related to propulsion and combustion

  • ground test facility flows
  • utilization of artificial intelligence for fluid dynamic problems
  • surface and near-surface flows
