The Laboratory for Advanced Ceramics Study (LACES) is located at the University of Tennessee Space Institute in Tullahoma. We specialize in nonequilibrium synthesis processes to discover and develop novel ceramic materials for extreme engineering applications. At the core of our laboratory are PVD synthesis systems, such as magnetron sputtering. Continuous investment in synthesis science, tools, and processes enables a deeper understanding of the processing-microstructure-property relationships that underpin the development of innovative ceramics.
In addition, our lab collaborates closely with experts in computational materials science, data science, machine learning, materials characterization, and property analysis. This interdisciplinary approach accelerates the discovery and development of advanced ceramic materials.
