Biography

B.H. Goethert Professor Marcias Martinez earned his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (1995) and Master’s degree in mechanical engineering (1997) from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. After working in the mass flow controller industry in California, he returned to complete a PhD in 2006 focused on finite element analysis of smart material structures. He later worked at the National Research Council Canada, Institute for Aerospace Research, on smart materials and structural health monitoring for aerospace applications.

Martinez served as a tenured faculty member at Delft University of Technology and later joined Clarkson University, where he served as Professor and Chair of the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department. He currently holds the B.H. Goethert Professorship in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Tennessee Space Institute, part of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Intelligent Materials Systems and Structures and the ASME Journal of Vibration and Acoustics, and was elected an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 2023.
