A short course aimed at providing fundamental knowledge required to carry out a satellite development program is planned for Aug. 1-5 at The University of Tennessee Space Institute.
Becky Stines, director of Continuing Education at UTSI, said participating engineers and managers will be exposed to wide areas of space systems, including design, manufacture, test, and operation as well as ensuring quality and minimizing risks.
Instructors are Prof. Young-Keun Chang, director of the Korean Space System Research Lab, part of the National Research Lab funded by Ministry of Science and Technology, and Prof. Robert Twiggs, director of the Space Systems Development Laboratory (SSDL).
Chang is a professor at the School of Aerospace Engineering in Hankuk Aviation University, Korea, and also is an adjunct professor at UTSI. He worked for the Korea Aerospace Research Institute between 1992 and 2000 as a system manager. He worked for General Electric Astro Division, New Jersey, as a visiting engineer developing Koreasat 1 and 2. He received his master’s degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University, and his doctorate from UT, both in aerospace engineering. His primary focus is on satellite system engineering, product assurance, and the application of satellite communications.
Twiggs is a consulting professor at Stanford University’s Aeronautics and Astronautics Department. He was the 2004 recipient of the Dean’s Award for Industry Education Innovation from Stanford’s School of Engineering. His bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering is from the University of Idaho and a master’s in the same discipline is from Stanford University. He left Weber State University in Utah to establish SSDL in 1994, with a charter to train students in overall systems engineering.
